Viewing and geotagging JIRA projects in Mapit

ProFields is a JIRA add-on from Deiser that allows you to have project-specific information fields for JIRA.

Starting from version 1.1, Mapit comes with support for ProFields, allowing you to store the geograpical position of JIRA projects, and view your project filters in Mapit. This page explains how to geotag and view projects in Mapit. Please refer to the ProFields documentation for more information about this add-on.

Adding location information to projects

If you want to geotag a project, you need to add the position manually. This is done by entering geograpic latitude and geographic longitude coordinates into designated project fields.

  1. Find the address and position you want to add to the project by using Mapit address search, OpenStreetMap search or other map services such as Google Maps or Bing Maps.

The format of the position (geographic latitude and longitude coordinates) must be in decimal degrees (DD), omitting the degree symbol, e.g. 68.12345 or 68,13456.

In the abovementioned map services, the latitude will be listed first, followed by the longitude.

  2. In a new browser tab, open the project menu for the project you want to geotag

  3. Navigate to the Add-ons section, and choose Project Fields

  4. Click Edit, and locate the project fields for storing geographical position. The name of the fields is set by your JIRA administrator, so names will vary, but the fields will most likely contain the words "latitude", "longitude", and "address"
If you can't find these fields, or do not have permission to edit the fields, please contact your JIRA administrator.

  5. Paste the geographic latitude coordinate from step 1 into the designated latitude field
Paste the geographic longitude coordinate from step 1 into the designated longitude field
Paste the address from step 1 into the designated address field

  6. Click "Save" to store the changes

Your project is now geotagged!

Viewing projects in Mapit

For a geotagged project to be visible in the Mapit map gadget, the following criteria need to be met:

  1. The project must match the search criteria of one of your ProFields project filters (in other words, it is included in the search results for that filter)
  2. The project filter containing the issue must be selected from the Mapit menu.

You also need to make sure you pan/zoom the map to the approximate geographical area your project is located, in order to actually see the project in the map. Try zooming out a few steps if you are unsure.

Key information at a glance

Click on a project pin to bring up a popup box containg key information for that project at a glance - e.g. project key, project name and geographical position:

Click on the project key to open the project's summary page in a new browser tab.

Limitations

  • Currently there is only one pin colour for projects (open/blue)
  • The gadget issue selector functions is limited to issues only, and will not work with projects
